Compare and Contrast the poem ‘Sonnet CXXX’ by William Shakespeare and an extract describing Iranian love poetry from the book Censoring an Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour published in 2009.
The poem and text are connected the the techniques used by the poets to describe women in love poetry. Shakespeare’s sonnet, written for his mistress the Dark Lady is part of his sequence parodies of Petrarchan blazon objectification of the female form, similarly the extract from Censoring an Iranian Love Story explores the technique used by Iranian Sufi poets in the past, the humour here is also tongue in cheek as the narrator makes reference to body parts that were ignored in comparisons

The most influential writer in all of English literature, William Shakespeare was born in 1564 to a successful middle-class glove-maker in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare attended grammar school, but his formal education proceeded no further. In 1582 he married an older woman, Anne Hathaway, and had three children with her. Around 1590 he left his family behind and traveled to London to work as an actor and playwright. Public and critical success quickly followed, and Shakespeare eventually became the most popular playwright in England and part-owner of the Globe Theater. His career bridged the reigns of Elizabeth I (ruled 1558–1603) and James I (ruled 1603–1625), and he was a

As Gavin is the first person narrator and the protagonist of the text, you get to know him quite well as you read the short story. He describes his relationship to his sister and his parents, who presumably are from a lower class – “As I said, my parents aren't middle-class, they don't understand

Romantic love guides a person’s mind and can sometimes cloud it as to what the right decision may be. After all, romantic love can be extremely selfless. The famous playwright, William Shakespeare, one of the greatest advocates for romantic love, alludes to romantic love as being like drunkenness in his play The Tempest. Like too much alcohol or happy drugs, romantic love takes over all senses in a person, and somewhat changes his or her outlook. A person in love romantically is often said to have a “permasmile” and is difficult to

William Shakespeare’s historical tragedy, Julius Caesar, recounts the Roman ruler’s fall from glory. At the beginning of the play, Marc Antony offers Julius Caesar the crown, which he refused trice. A Roman senator, Casca, describes the scene to Cassius and Brutus, two of the conspirators who assassinate Caesar. Caesar was not honorable in his reaction to being crowned because, given his power hungry nature, he was merely pretending to be turning it down.
There is much to speculate about Caesar’s true intentions behind refusing the crown. Casca, being one of the conspirators, is openly critical of Caesar’s actions. Evidence of this can be seen in the following quote: “he put it by once

“I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on.” In Act I scene v of The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, Prince Hamlet proclaims these famous words. It is very possible that, if Hamlet were alive today, he would have been diagnosed with many mental illnesses including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and bipolar disorder. He was buried in Westminster Abby as the first in the now-called ‘Poet’s Corner’ where some of the most important poets and writers are buried. He was initially buried there because he worked as a Clerk of Works to the Westminster palace, but it changed into a place to bury and commemorate important writers and poets.
