According to the Webster dictionary communication is (“A process in which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, and behavior.”)1 in this research paper it will be addressing verbal and nonverbal communication. The difference between hearing, and listening is another component of communication. Another thing that is going to be mentioned is the different barriers to effective communication in criminal justice organizations. In the end the research carries us to the different barriers to effective communication in criminal justice organizations.

A persons the ability to hear is a fifth since. The definition of it in the Webster’s Dictionary (“the process, function, or power of perceiving sound; specifically: the special sense by which noises and tones are received as stimuli.”). The vibrations from the sounds goes to the brain. That is just hearing sounds. Listening requires for the person to pay attention the person is telling them so they can provide feedback. In the Webster’s Dictionary it describes listening as (“to hear something with thoughtful attention: give consideration.”) according to research there are four types of communication which is a non-listener, they are too busy with their own self. Passive listeners provide a vague answer, because the really don’t understand the question. They only talk about what interest them. Next is the active listener they pay attention throughout the whole speech, and have an open mind. They stay focused on the speaker. The best communicator is an active listener, and they understand words and emotions. So the difference between listening and hearing is the way you perceive it and answer it with a clear answer that is an active listener. By listening and watching a person can detect the way someone is feeling by their body language.
Formal, and informal channels of communication each come with certain advantages and disadvantages. The formal channels restricts some information, but it remains solidarity. The chain of command directs the channels up or downward, even horizontal levels of command. Downward channels could be disciplinary actions sent down to the supervisors. Then upwards communication is usually feedback. Horizontal communication is with people on the same level.
They call the informal channels the grape vine. On this level they exchange information that has been over heard. When people alter the information it is no longer valid. This starts cliques and people bond and become a group. This is like certain police officers go to the doughnut shop and hang out on break. The informal channel has efficiency. Both of the channels formal and informal have efficiency, and inefficient of information sending and receiving. Where the police is concerned they follow formal procedures, and even with the Maranda right itself. Police officers always have to report back so the message needs to clear.
There are many barriers in the criminal justice system here are some of them Emotional Barriers, Physical Barriers , Semantic Barriers, and Ineffective Listening. The emotional barriers is if someone is upset and won’t talk to the police officer. That is an emotional...
