Have you ever asked yourself the question, what keeps employees motivated in the workplace? The answer is simple; people are generally motivated by intrusive and extrusive factors. Intrusive motivation is influenced by an inward interest or satisfaction of a person. Intrusive motivators are very valuable because it enhances persistence, creativity and well being. Extrusive motivation involves those things which are tangible, such as rewards and incentives. Extrusive motivators tend to lose their motivating properties because they are influenced by social and environmental factors. People are driven by motivation. There are many reason and they all stem from some form of motivation. I go to work every morning for the following reasons: I have bills to pay, I have three kids to provide for and I like material things. UPS offers great benefits and that motivates me to go to work as well. UPS also offers goals and objectives and that also keeps me motivated to go to work.
UPS offers one of the most comprehensive total compensations packages available in today’s workforce. This total compensation package includes full benefits for both part-time and full-time employees. The company offers medical and dental coverage to all employees. In addition to medical and dental insurance, UPS also offers vision insurance, prescription drug plan, disability insurance and life insurance. Employee discounts, tuition reimbursements and scholarship programs are also available to those employees who would like to take advantage of them. This benefit package definitely motivates me to go the work daily.
One of the most important underlying factors behind UPS’s success is its ability to set goals and achieve them. UPS sets reasonable goals for its employees in efforts to motivate them. These goals help build intrusive and extrusive motivation. Employees feel a sense of worth once they have accomplished a goal and that motivates them to produce more. Goal setting is good because it gives the employee something to aim for. UPS has an UPS bucks program in place. This program is designed to reward employees for reaching certain goals. One example is, I am a traffic analysis, and the objective of my job is to clear international trade at the least expense to the customer as well as UPS. If I can clear this freight error-free without causing the customer or UPS additional charges then I am reward UPS bucks for this accomplishment. With these bucks I can purchase snacks from the vending machine or save them to purchase larger items from the UPS on-line store. This is a great incentive for meeting company goals and seems to be working very well.
It is very important that an organization identity what motivational strategies should be utilized in order to improve performance in the workplace. I believe that an organization must first of all know its employees behavior and motives. The employer must also understand rather the employee is an introvert or extrovert so management can adequately cater to the employee’s motivational needs. This will intern decrease employee resistance to increasing productivity. The management’s philosophy of motivation and its principles has the ability to set a positive climate for their employees. The way that management views their employees and communicates with them has a tremendous impact on the employee’s behavior. According to CliffsNotes (2010), “Two popular theories are Douglas McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y, which talk about how managers create self-fulfilling prophecies based on how they treat their employees (para. 2)”.
