CORPORATE STRATEGY AND STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT

The course is concerned with the Strategic Management issues and tasks faced by general managers in organisations. These involve determining the purpose and direction of the organisation, establishing objectives and formulating strategies to achieve them, which take account of changes in the environment and the organisation’s competence. This multiple choice test will be based on questions emanating from the course text book. Therefore, it is important that you begin your reading of the course text during the first week of term. The multiple choice questions will be taken from ALL of the chapters in the textbook. This means that you should have read ALL of the textbook by week 7.
Corporate Strategy and Strategic Management will be taught through lectures and tutorials. The lectures will be given by Professor Jim Rafferty. Tutorials will be shared between Prof. Rafferty and Mr Tahiru Liedong. Lectures will take place in the Radcliffe Centre on a Tuesday from 11:15 to 13.05.
Tutorials, commencing in the second week of term, will be held on a weekly basis on Monday’s, Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Friday’s. Please ensure that you sign up for a tutorial session during the first week of term. Tutorial lists will be posted on Moodle and no more than seven names are allowed in any one tutorial session.
Week 1. The concept of Strategy and the Prescriptive - Emergent dichotomy.
Week 2. Managing Strategic Change: Incrementalism and the process of strategy.
Week 3. Generic Strategies.
Week 4. The Resource Based View of the Firm: Core Competencies, the Value Chain and Strategic Groups.
Week 5. Acquisitions and Mergers.
Week 6. Corporate Strategy and Financial Management.
Week 7. Class Test: Multiple choice.
Week 8. The PIMS Analysis; and revision session.
The tutorial assignments will be based on corresponding chapter readings in the course text, which is “ Foundations of Strategy”, by Robert M Grant and Judith Jordan, published by Wiley (ISBN: 9780470971277) . Please ensure that you prepare the assignment questions prior to the tutorial.
Under the University’s General Regulations for First Degrees (Regulation 9.6), you are required to attend tutorials punctually and regularly. Non attendance at tutorials can lead to exclusion from the examination. It is important, therefore, that you attend tutorials. It is also important that you prepare for your tutorials. Attending tutorials unprepared to discuss the questions at hand may lead to you being asked to leave the tutorial.
Tutorial Work Assignments:
The tutorial assignments are based on your readings of the chapters listed below and the questions posed at the end of each chapter. All chapters are important and should be read by the end of week 7 of the term, which coincides with the class test based on your readings of the textbook.
