They also have two procurement centers which help them distribute the goods to their stores. They also have the ability to make large purchase for a lower cost which in turn means they can have lower prices for the consumers. They are also one of a few stores in the country that strictly sell natural and organic foods in one store. They also have are able to hit different markets with different store sizes and different products in each store based on the customers in that area. Another big strength is their employees. They hire high quality employees an empower them to and challenge them to find was to do things better. One of the weaknesses is that the mainstream grocery stores are entering the organic food market and this may takes some of the market share away from Whole Foods Market.
One of the weaknesses is currently the economy. Because of this the company has slowed the expansion. Another weakness is the stigma that the food is expensive. Whole Food Markets as tried to fix that problem by having competitive pricing and store brand products like the major regular grocery stores have on their shelves.
The biggest opportunity I believe they have is to expand internationally even more than they are now. They should also continue to grow in the United States and have the market share in both big cities and smaller towns. Another big opportunity would be to hit the internet for the non-perishable items. They can also continue to create their own brand of products and expand that market. If the company continues to empower their employees and remain forward thinking then they will be able to continue to grow and thrive in this industry. Another opportunity is the lack of a major national brand for organic food. Whole Foods Market can capture this through marketing and developing their brand as a national brand.
The availability of prime store location is a threat to the company. They try and open the stores where customers are getting higher salaries and there will be able to purchase the products. Also, farmers do not grow organic crops due to strict government regulations and they are much more difficult to grow. Because the company’s biggest product is organic food any supply reduction would have a negative effect on the business.
