Strategic business planning outlines the long range perspective of the business, and sets the primary objectives and goals for the company. It directly feeds into operational planning, which defines the organizational strategies and the resources required to accomplish the long range goals. With the help of the operational planning, managers identify which parts of the business they need to hire new talent and plan for budget requirements.

The actual work done by the employees is a direct reflection of the operational planning. A manager can use this information to ensure his department has necessary talent to carry out the tasks requested by the upper management. If the talent to complete the necessary tasks is not available, the manager can ask for new talent with relevant justification for this new hire during the annual budgeting.
In addition, the job description is a great starting point for establishing SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable with a stretch, Relevant, Timely) goals for the employee. These goals can be used to evaluate the employee’s success and performance on an annual basis. This will also help the manager to track his organization’s alignment towards the operational goals for his or her division.
Also, a manager that is assigned to lead a new organization can use the job design information to better understand what employees should be working on, and assess the relevance of their current workloads. This will help the manager to revise and make changes in the workload and restructure the organization, as necessary.
