The term ‘online’ is the state of being connected to a network of computers or other devices. This term is often used to refer to someone who is currently connected to the internet. Information system is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, processing, and communicating information. Individuals, corporations, and businesses alike all rely on information systems to manage their operations, compete in the marketplace, supply services, and balance daily lives. A web-based application allows the information processing functions to be initiated remotely from a client/browser and executed partly on a Web, application, or database server. These applications are specifically designed to be executed in a Web-based environment. The internet provides, what appears to be, a wide variety of websites. There are actually two types of websites. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) or static websites and Web Software (web application). HTML behaves simply like printed newspapers or magazines. Here the end users can find published or printed materials. Some examples of this type of website are The New York Times, USA Today, and AL.com. The second type of website, web software, enables the end users to interact with the website. Web pages are generated based on the response of the end user’s input. This type of web page often works as software and utilities. Web software operates on servers and end users accessing the applications through web browsers. Some examples of web applications are internet banking, online retail stores, email services, gaming sites. Web applications are more complicated than HTML sites and offer deployment of software applications to the end client.
Web Mining is broadly defined as the discovery and analysis of useful information from the World Wide Web. Data is collected at different levels in Web Mining: server side, proxy servers, client side, or organization’s database. In example, data can be stored, at the client level, in browser caches or cookies; and at the server/proxy level, in access log files. Web Mining can be decomposed into four subtasks: information retrieval, analysis, information extraction, and generalization.
Information retrieval addresses the automatic discovery of all relevant documents that are appropriate to the specific query. The focus of the work on information retrieval is on an automatic indexing where there are well-defined techniques. The difficulty here is the large number of web pages, their heterogeneity, and the frequent changes in content information and amount of information available. Currently, there are a number of search engines available to query and retrieve documents from the web. Each one has their own unique interface and database. Although there are a lot of options to query, these engines only...
