It all began in 1962, Sam Walton opened his first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas. This was when grocery stores were becoming popular and he wanted to take a different spin on the idea. He followed behind Kmart and Target. Today Walmart has over 8500 stores in 55 different countries and employees over 1.4 million people. Walmart has set a precedent that others have tried to follow, but have not been as successful. Kmart was initially opened under a different name in 1899.the retailer was known for low prices. The first Kmart store was opened in Michigan in 1962. In 1976, Kmart made history by opening 271 stores in one year. This is an example of growing to big too fast. According to Sears Holding Corporation, “In 1996, a complete redesign of the Kmart store was launched, making them cleaner, brighter and easier to shop.” This included things like a pantry department that sold frequently purchased items, which were moved to the front of the store. They also began emphasizing on home fashions. These changes led to the new name for the remodeled stores, Big Kmart. Also in 1999 they launched a website that focused on discount items. In 2003 the company filled Chapter 11 bankruptcy, now they have determined to regain strength within their company.
Each organization has its own marketing, finance and human resource influence. How successful they are depends on the people who are making the decisions. Walmart has been very controversial in regards to their locations. Some people have rallied against them opening stores in small rural areas. It was said that they would take the “mom and pop” stores out of business, due to their competitive pricing. These are the areas that Walmart thrives in, areas where there is little to no competition. Walmart focuses on to open stores Kmart of Target may not. You will only find Target stores in areas with a high population. Walmart focuses on all of your needs taken care of in one place. When Kmart began this in 1999 they offered blue and black light specials, online. They also introduced Super Kmart. Although they had a good idea they were forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2003.
