Video Games And Violence

Video games and the violence in them have a large impact on children’s behavior.

Video games can be addicting, making a child aggressive, which could lead children to

do terrible things. They love to play video games because they are fun and exciting.

Some parents allow them to play these games because they are fun and exciting. They are

also allowed to play these games because it keeps them quiet or out of the way, not

realizing that some of these video games are causing more bad than they are good.

Video games can turn into an addiction. If a video game consumes most of a child’s

time then they could easily forget to shower, excessive junk food eating ...view middle of the document...

This aggression is caused by the amount of time kids are

allowed to play video games, studies showed by Walsh (2000), teens were honest and

told the truth that their parents do not give them a time limit on game playing. This same

study also showed that some of these parents were not aware of the content or rating of

the games played by their children. There was another study by Gentile, Lynch, Linder,

and Walsh “ adolescent girls played video games for an average of five hours a week”. It

was also stated that teens that play violent games for periods of time are more aggressive,

have confrontation or arguments with their teachers, end up getting into physical fights

with their peers, and school achievement decreases instead of increases.

The negative things emphasized in video games can cause children to do awful things.

Some of these things may consist of killing people or animals, drug and/or alcohol abuse,

and criminal behavior, and foul language. There are a greater number of violent

responses from the children who play violent video games.

As a parent and teacher, it could make things much easier by placing a child in front

of the television to play video games. We have found that violent video games can be

addicting, can have an impact on our children, and could lead to awful things happening

in their lives. Parent, teachers, or anyone who deals with children on a regular basis

should pay close attention to the video games ratings. Video games do not have to be

completely eliminated from a child’s life but be aware of the material in them. There are

some video games that could be more harmful than good. The children are our future and

they are only what we help to make them.
