9μg, and FFQ quartile one was 1040.5μg/day. The standard deviations of FFQ were found to be lower than 8DDR for every quartile. Variations between the data sets from each quartile reported a 75% correct or adjacently correct classification between the two methods of dietary assessment. Further analysis via a student paired t-test of each quartile returned p-values <0.0001 showing an extremely significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The data collected indicates that a simple self-administered dietary questionnaire can provide useful general information about an individual's nutrient intake.Key Words:Food frequency questionnaire.Eight day diet record.Vitamin A.Dietary assessment.Nutrition student.Food intake.Introduction Food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) are a method of dietary assessment used to gain information on habitual food intake. They are designed to gather specific information about the frequency with which food items are consumed over a set reference period (1). The general design of a FFQ consists of a food list, as well as a frequency response section which allows subjects to report on how often an individual food has been eaten (2). Food lists can be broad and may include commonly eaten foods consumed by the population, or tailored to target specific food groups or nutrients of particular interest. FFQs are utilized by healthcare practitioners such as nutritionists, epidemiologists and doctors, and can be used to gain information for either an individual's or a population's dietary profile. FFQs are the preferred method of dietary analysis as they are somewhat cheaper and more easily conducted in relation to various other analytical techniques (2). FFQs were first introduced and evaluated in the 1950s. Since then, they have continued to develop and improve (1). Vitamin A is a group of fat-soluble retinoids and is an essential micronutrient for the human body(3). It has multiple forms, including retinol, retinal and retinoic acid. Vitamin A plays an important role in human health as it is involved in many of the bodies' basic functions such as vision, reproduction and the development of an immune response. There are two main forms of vitamin A utilised in the diet, they are known as preformed vitamin A (retinol) and carotenoids. Retinol is the active and useable form and is found within foods such as meat and dairy products, while carotenoids, the inactive form of vitamin A, are found within plant sources such as fruit and vegetables. According to nutrient reference values, for males and females aged between 14-50 years, the recommended dietary intake (RDI) for vitamin A is 900μg and 700μg respectively (3). The aim of this study was to assess the validity of a FFQ in comparison to an 8 day diet record via the evaluation of the average vitamin A intake from each. Method A food frequency questionnaire was designed to assess the average daily intake of vitamin A. This was done by choosing foods from the...
