PURPOSE:
Learn the basics of measurement and statistical analysis in context of volume and
density.

EQUIPMENT:
Three different geometric solids: 1 identified as white cylinder, 1 identified as
brass-colored cylinder, 1 identified as silver-colored sphere.
Meter stick (wooden, displaying measurements in cm)
Analog scale (zero-ed prior to experiment)
Manual caliper
Digital caliper (zero-ed prior to each measurement)

Three
solid objects include white cylinder (Object 1), brass-colored cylinder
(Object 2), silver-colored sphere (Object 3). Tools include meter stick,
analog scale, manual caliper and digital caliper.

Using meter stick, each team member independently measures length, width,
and height of Object 1 to record trials 1-3 in cm. Trials 4-5 were measured
by the team together. Each measurement was recorded in lab notebooks.

Using the analog scale, each team member independently measures mass of
Object 1 to record trials 1-3 in g. Trials 4-5 were measured by the team
together. Each measurement was recorded in lab notebook.

Using the manual caliper, each team member independently measures
length, width, and height of Object 1 to record trials 1-3 in cm. Trials 4-5
were measured by the team together. Each measurement was recorded in lab
notebooks.

Using the digital caliper, each team member independently measures length,
width, and height of Object 1 to record trials 1-3 in cm. Trials 4-5 were
measured by the team together. Each measurement was recorded in lab
notebooks.

The volume of Object 1 was calculated as V=πr²h for each trial and recorded
as cm³ in lab notebooks.

The density of Object 1 was calculated as D=m/V for each trial and recorded
as g/cm³ in lab notebooks.

The mean and standard deviations were calculated for each set of
measurements (calculations defined in Data section of this report) and
results were recorded in the lab notebook.

This procedure was repeated again for Object 2 and for Object 3 with each
having a separate data table recorded in lab notebooks.
