Cold War Era
The Cold War was an important event in our history. Reason being is that it shaped political ideology, foreign policies, impacted our economy, the Presidency and created an uneasy climate among Americans. The United States had been suspicious of the Soviet Union since the 1910’s, but became allies with them when Russia was invaded by the Nazi party in WWII. After WWII, the conflicts and suspicions arose again. It wasn’t necessarily the fear of America falling to communism but the fear that it would have Global domination, leaving America to stand alone. The threat of “spy’s” in America became a daily topic and grew widespread panic. Within the era of the Cold War many events took place; Berlin Blockade, the Korean War, Berlin, Cuban Missile Crisis, Bay of Pigs invasion, the Vietnam War, and the Soviets in Afghanistan. There was also the “second Cold War” which swept the Reagan administration and it all finally ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Protecting My Family
The preparations I would take in protecting my family would all be based on survival instincts. Realistically, I know in this decade that if an atomic bomb hit close to where I was, there is no escaping it. However, looking back I can see back when the threats first came about, we, as American civilians knew little on what would happen with an atomic bomb.
I would probably start with friends and family and join together to build or establish a shelter (bunker if you will), to where we could all escape too. With everyone taking part I the preparations, it would be much faster to construct and have ready. I would ensure that if we survive the “bomb”, that we would have all the essentials on hand: weapons and ammunition (in case of close combat), water, water filtration supplies,...
