Unequal Education Essay

1. After watching the video “Unequal Education”, reading “Savage Inequalities” by Kozol and all other assigned documents, it is clear that there is in fact a relationship between poverty, race, and school spending per pupil. The relationship is the impoverished are generally non-white (black or Hispanic) and their school districts spend less on students than those that are located in more affluent, white areas. As a result, the more affluent areas provide children with many facilities for different activities, equipment to keep students engaged, and after school activities to keep students away from community dangers while poorer neighborhoods teach classes in storage rooms, provide an ...view middle of the document...

Moreover, the odds of possibly finding happiness are even better outside of school than in school. Many poor schools do not have the equipment to keep students engaged in learning thus leading to boredom and lack of motivation. As seen in “Unequal Education,” the more affluent schools provided students with microscopes and actual instruments for everyone to individually use. On the other hand, students in the poorer school used their books and chairs as tools for learning science and keyboards for learning music. Quite frankly, these students did not look as engaged or happy as the more affluent ones did. Furthermore, learning in packed class rooms that are sometimes overlapped with other classes while richer schools have enough facilities to accommodate all avenues of learning, increased the lack of motivation to go to school. The fact that the poor children are aware that more affluent children get many more resources than them at school further increases the lack of motivation to go to school.

3. When it comes to public schools, funding initially relies on property taxes. In addition to funding from property taxes, are both state and federal funding. Typically, poorer areas will take a higher tax rate than the richer because they place education as a top priority. Despite the substantially large tax rate difference, the poor areas still end up with less money than the rich to be spent per student. Kozol points out that even wealthy suburbs manage to rake in “a larger tax base” in relation to a city with thousands of poor people. Since property tax is considered a tax deduction on a federal level, a “substantial portion” of the money put in to fund schools is given back thus creating a federal subsidy on schools. However, the rich will receive a much larger subsidy than the poor because of the amount of taxes paid. Even though the poor have a higher tax rate than the rich on property and tend to live in more densely populated areas, the wealthy live on property valued much higher than the poor. Therefore, despite the difference in the tax-rate, the wealthy will still be generating a larger amount of taxes leading to a larger deduction and a larger subsidy.

4. I believe that Kozol’s title of “Savage Inequality,” is related to how the poor minority groups are treated by government.
