One of the most important social problems faced by any person is unemployment. Unemployment may lead to loss of self-esteem, depression, and chronic worry about how to provide for dependents. Underemployment is when a person is either not actually out of a job, but due to need for money, has taken a job which does not allow him (her) to take care of the people and housing as it was done before. It also may include joblessness when people give up on looking for a job. Both situations can be stressful and lead to serious emotional and physical illness. Many had no income to pay rent or even to buy food. The president at that time, Herbert Hoover, did not believe in handouts but it was too late when he realized the extreme poverty could not be ignored. He not only lost the next presidential election, but had set the stage for national reorganization and government control on a scale not seen before.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born into a wealthy aristocratic family. He grew up on a large estate in the New York area. He greatly admired his 5th cousin, President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt and early on had aspirations of following in his footsteps. Given the economic conditions at the time, Roosevelt won the 1932 presidential race “by a landslide”. His platform was one of hope and having a plan to fix the broken economy of this broken country and he described this in his inaugural address. This formed the basic ideas of Roosevelt’s NEW DEAL. ”. Roosevelt’s inaugural address described to the people in a surefire, can’t miss, inaugural speech how he planned to accomplish the recovery of a mismanaged economic state which had brought about the current tragic state of America. He would redistribute the wealth of private people as well as relocating those in factories to jobs on farms. He would initiate major work projects to stimulate jobs and recovery. These could be done by DIRECT RECRUITING BY THE GOVERNMENT. The president went on to state that should the legislative and congressional bodies not comply, he would have to use Executive power to enforce his policies. While there was credit for some useful changes and direction towards safeguards for some of the less fortunate, the blame for the tragic state being on the greedy financiers brought more big government to Americans and Regulations on banking, Results of these methods have not been shown to have brought about real evidence of recovery- in fact, Roosevelt’s New Deal did not produce noticeable economic gain- the onset of World War II was the greatest stimulus for the economy and economic recovery.
