Unit 516 – Understand safeguarding of children and young people (for those working in the adult sector)

Learning Outcome 2.1. Describe the possible signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviours that may cause concern in the context of safeguarding.
Possible signs depend on the type of abuse. The UK Government identifies 4 types of abuse:
1. Physical abuse
2. Emotional abuse
3. Sexual abuse
4. Neglect.
The signs can be physical or changes in behaviour.
Physical abuse
Physical abuse is the deliberate physical injury to a child, or the wilful neglectful failure to prevent physical injury or suffering.
The physical signs of abuse may include: unexplained bruises and injuries, burns, bite marks, fractures, scalds. Changes in behaviour include the following: fear of parents being approached, flinching when approached or touched, aggressive or withdrawn behaviour, reluctance to get changed.
Emotional abuse
Emotional abuse is the persistent emotional ill-treatment of a child such as to cause severe and persist adverse effects on the child’s emotional development. It may involve conveying to children that their worthless or unloved, inadequate, it may involve causing children frequently to be frightened or in danger, or the exploitation or corruption of children.
Changes in behaviour which might indicate emotional abuse: sulking, hair twisting, rocking or behaviour which is neurotic in nature; being unable to play; fear of making mistakes; speech disorders; self- harm; fear of parents being approached; delay of emotional development.
Sexual abuse
Sexual abuse involves forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activities. The activities may involve physical contact, including penetrative or non-penetrative acts. They may include non-contact activities, such as involving children in looking at the production of, pornographic material or watching sexual activities.
The physical signs of abuse may include: pain, itching bruising or bleeding in or near genital area; vaginal discharge, infection or sexually transmitted disease; stomach pains; discomfort when walking or sitting down; pregnancy.
Changes in behaviour include: aggressive or withdrawn behaviour; fear with being left with a specific person; having nightmares; bedwetting; inappropriate sexual knowledge or behaviour; eating problems; self- harm, substance or drug abuse; unexplained sources of money.
Neglect
Neglect is the persistent failure to meet am child’s physical, emotional and/or psychological needs, likely to result in significant harm. It may involve a parent or carer failing to provide adequate food, shelter and clothing.
The physical signs of abuse may include: the child being constantly hungry, dirty or smelly; loss of weight or being constantly underweight; inappropriate clothing for the conditions.
