To Kill a Mockingbird Assignment #2 – Arisa Hashimoto
2. Theme – Why is it a sin to kill a Mockingbird? Which two characters does the Mockingbird symbolize and why? Provide examples.
A mockingbird is an innocent creature which never harms us but instead sing for us. It represents kindness, innocence, and harmlessness. When Atticus gives Jem and Scout, his two kids air rifles for Christmas, he gets Uncle Jack to teach the kids how to shoot. Atticus warns them that they can “shoot all the blue jays”, but to remember that “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Scout was confused, so she approached her neighbour, Ms. Maudie. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. ...view middle of the document...

It becomes clear that Tom Robinson is innocent because if someone hit Mayella with his left hand, then Tom couldn’t have done that because his left arm is useless and is hanging at his side. Atticus proves that Bob Ewell is indeed left handed by asking him to write his name on a piece of paper. Although Atticus proved to everyone in the courtroom that Tom Robinson was innocent, the jury and the townspeople didn’t approve of the reasons as to why he is innocent. The jury just decided on the fact that Tom was a black man; therefore, he should be guilty. The town commits the ultimate sin by finding Tom Robinson guilty.

He knew that he was innocent, and he wanted to go back to the life he was living before the trial, before he had been accused of raping a white woman. He probably had enough of the trial, and always being the one blamed for all of the good things he has done.
