Time Management Essay

In this assignment I am going to explain and evaluate the benefits and skills needed for good time management. Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific actives, especially to increase efficiency or productivity. Effective time management must sit in the context of knowing what we want. Perhaps’ as we become aware of where our time goes we can start to identify the time management problems we need to solve.

Our list should start with tasks/actives/appointments and should also include preparation towards the larger short and long term goals. To help understand the order of importance we should mark them in order, A (must be done) B ((should be done) or C (can be done if there is time). Prioritizing our list helps us focus and spend more time on things that really matter.

I have also looked the importance of Good communication. We need to be aware that when working along side others that we have delivered good communication through clear dialogue. Good clear communication will reduce misunderstandings. We should always confirm our own understanding. This works by taking responsibility for how we communicate. This will prevent time wasting. Having the inability to say no is another important factor. No is a little word and can have big consequences. We should never be afraid to us this. Many times we become overloaded with to much work because we over commit; we say yes when we should be saying no. we need to learn to say no to low priority requests.

Wall planners, charts, diaries and to do list are great tools which help us communicate and organize our daily monthly and yearly tasks. In my opinion these form the backbone of personal organization skills. Tools like diaries make it a lot easier to keep track of things. Diaries can be used for all sorts of appointments and meetings. It is not unfamiliar to make appointments with yourself. This helps when we need to set aside time for specific tasks. Wall planners and charts provide us, with a large picture view of our plans at a glance. Wall charts and planners need to be continuously up dated to detail the way forward. These should include the timelines or deadlines, including projects, outlined blocks of committed time, monthly meeting, conferences, training and holidays. Having planned by the use of to do lists, wall charts and diaries this will us help identified and focus our goals. Setting these correctly provides the necessary content and support required to manage their implications.

Goal setting gives us something to commit to. It motivates and guides us in the right direction. Work Smart, specific –what we want precisely and how do we achieve this, achievable-the objective is depending upon us. This gives us a sense of control. Realistic - most objectives may require a change in priorities to make them happen. Time bound - Setting deadlines for achievement of objectives. These create the necessary focus which help set priority and prompt actions. We must keep in mind which Goals we are working towards, short term goals are the ones that we want to achieve in the immediate future e.g. today, this week or over the next lot of weeks. Long term goals are what we hope to achieve over a longer period of time. It is important to review as it’s good to see that we are progressing towards our goals.
