University of Maryland Medical Center. 24 Oct 2005. 6 Dec 2007.Leviticus 13:1-7; 45-49Leviticus 14Numbers 12LEPROSYThroughout its history, leprosy has been feared and misunderstood. For a long time leprosy was thought to be a hereditary disease, a curse, or a punishment from God. Before and even after the discovery of its biological cause, leprosy patients were stigmatized and shunned. The Lesions are flat and red but later become large, hard irregular and swollen, with pale depressed centers. Lepromatous leprosy is a different type of leprosy and is much more contagious than the tuberculiod form. Children are more susceptible to this than adults. Both of these types of leprosy cause nerve damage in the arms and legs which causes sensory loss in the skin and muscle weakness. Long-term lepers may lose the use of their hands or feet due to repeated injury from lack of sensation. In advanced cases gangrene will set in and the flesh will rot on the patient. Leprosy leaves a patient with scars and can be left deformed and crippled. In the bible days and the days of the ancient Romans they treated the physical effects of leprosy with cleansing and isolation. The spiritual treatment is much, much different. As stated in Leviticus 14: 2-20, there are many steps to the spiritual cleansing of the leper. First the diseased person at the time of his ceremonial cleansing is to be brought to a priest. Then the priest is to go outside the camp and examine him. If the person has been healed of his infectious skin disease, the priest will order that 2 live, clean birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop (a fragrant plant similar to mint) be brought for the one to be cleansed. Then the priest will order that one of the birds be killed over fresh water in a clay pot. He is then to take the live bird and dip it, together with the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn and the hyssop, into the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. Then his will sprinkle the one to be cleansed of the infectious disease seven times and pronounce him clean. Then the live bird is released into the open fields. The person to be cleansed must wash his clothes, shave off all his hair and bathe with water; then he will be ceremonially clean. After this he may come into the camp, but he must stay outside his tent from 7 days. On the 7th day he must shave off all his hair. He must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water again, and then he will be clean. Then on the 8th...
