"August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains"
By Lasse Lundqvist

What would the world look like in the future, if nuclear bombs were dropped in the United States of America? One option for that answer is to find I the short story “There will come soft rains - August 2026” by Ray Bradbury. This essay will deal with the human technology development, which is a threat for the. Nevertheless, the nature will always recover from the destruction of technology.
Through the narrative we get to know the routine of the everyday life in an empty house, with the only purpose of serving the gods; the humans. The story takes place in the year 2026, and mankind has invented a house that is capable of ...view middle of the document...

The two coffees and two glasses of milk indicate that the family consists of two adults and two children. This thought is confirmed by the description of the outside wall. “The five spots of paint—the man, the woman, the children, the ball—remained.”(Bradbury l.38 p.1) In the wall of the house, a shadow of the four family members is remained untouched, which again confirms that the place is deserted. This paragraph also explains that the family was helpless, or at least they were not prepared to be exposed for the damage the bomb caused.
Through the text it is clear that something is going to happen. “Until this day, how well the house had kept its peace… it had shut up its windows and drawn shades in an old maidenly preoccupation with self-protection which bordered on a mechanical paranoia.”(Bradbury l.1 p.2) From this foreshadowing it becomes clear that something will change on this exact day. From the description, the reader will suspect the house will end up in anything but peace, more like the opposite; complete chaos. This is also the first time the reader is introduced to the conflict between the nature and the technology, which will be addressed later. Several times the house is described as a humanlike organism with feelings, and the mechanical paranoia is an example of that. The effect of the human characteristics brings life to a story without any people, and makes the reading interesting.
Apart from what I stated before about how the house symbolizes the development of technology, the house could also symbolize Earth. The house contains thousands of smaller enliven robots, which makes the house resemble the world. The house is a hint to the fact, that we should be protecting the earth...
