The Growing Problem with Obesity
One of the biggest health problems that face America’s is the increasing number of obese people. Obesity has surpassed smoking as the number one cause of health risks in America. With the number of obese people growing by the day something has to be done soon. Many people know and understand that alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs are bad for us and should not be used, but few people know or realize that food could be just as damaging. Food is just like water, we need it to survive, but if it is used in excess it could be very damaging or deadly to the human body. America and the world have been getting larger and larger over the last thirty to forty years ...view middle of the document...
Never before have there been so much processed, packaged, colored, and sugared foods, items. People have been getting away from fresh foods and clean drinking water and these have been replaced with refined flours, packaged goodies, and sugary drinks.
The problem with obesity is not just limited to adults; children and even pets are subjected to unhealthy eating habits as Dr. Ray Hinish gives an example that on a jog he saw an overly obese couple in lawn chairs sitting in the park, but what really stuck with him was their dog was overly obese also (Hinish &Alberg, 2010). The bad eating habits of the people transferred over to the dog. Most domestic dogs only eat what is given to them, so by having an obese dog the owners feed the dog in a way that was making it obese. This trend of eating unhealthy also affects peoples children.
Many children are also affected by how and what they are feed, “In 1980, children that were overweight or obese were only 7% of the child population. By 2008, the percentage of overweight and obese children jumped to nearly 20% in the United States, a figure that keeps growing each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). Up until now, each generation of children has had a longer life expectancy than their parents (Dorman, n.d., Kindle). This is due to the fact that there are better medicines and technology and much more information on the effects of various factors to health than in previous years. According to Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, “We may be seeing the first generation of children that will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents” (Dorman, n.d., Kindle). “Why? More U.S. children are becoming more obese at a younger age, putting them at risk of dying decades earlier than normal weight children and at risk of suffering what were once “old-age illnesses” while in their twenties” (Dorman, n.d., Kindle).
For years it was thought and taught that a calorie was a calorie and that as long as a person burned more calories than they in took they would lose weight, and if they took in more calories than they burned they would gain weight, but this is not the fact these day. If this was true than why are there over weight six month old babies? It is a combination of sugars and processed foods that are actually changing the chemical make-up of our bodies and are actually making us fatter even if we eat few calories than we burn, because “a calorie is no longer just a calorie, it’s something more” (University of California, 2012, episode 1). The human body was not meant to take in such odd and unneeded chemicals such as preservatives and even genetically modified (GM) foods.
The foods that we eat directly affect how our bodies operate, so eating things that are not healthy or have lots of unusual and unneeded chemicals is not good for our overall health. Food affects many things in our bodies such as our fat stores (body weight) and even our brain functions and...
