What is a learning style? It is a preferred way of acquiring knowledge and processing information. A learning style affects how we learn, how we solve problems, how we work, how we participate in different activities, how we react in a group, and how we relate to others around us (Lamarche-Bisson 2002). Each individual person learns differently. The ways people receive information may be divided into three categories, sometimes referred to as modalities visual—sights, pictures, diagrams, symbols; auditory— sounds, words; kinesthetic—taste, touch, and smell (Felder; Silverman 1988). Auditory learners tend to read things out loud to themselves. The auditory learner likes speaking in class, is good at explaining things, and is good in study groups. The auditory listener, learns by listening to other people and may even carry on mental conversations and resolve problems by thinking back on what people have said (Conner, M.L 2004). Auditory people are more understanding when people to explain things to them than when they just show them how to do it. Auditory learners tend to become overwhelmed with information. By being an auditory listener there are a few ways to make your abilities work such as: watch videos, tape lectures, listen to books on tape, and make notes. The best way to work with auditory learners is to talk to them on the phone, or talk in person.
Kinesthetic learner you incorporate information through touch and movement (Conner, M.L. 2004). Kinesthetic learners are the type of learners that are considered “hands on” and like to get their hands dirty. Kinesthetic learners are also the type of learner that has to always be moving. Kinesthetic people like to be involved in a demonstration rather than having a demonstration shown to them. Being a kinesthetic learner there are many ways to make learning much easier, and they are as simple as moving around while talking or taking notes to keep busy and not get bored.
