The purpose of this report is to discuss the role that Human-resource management has in the tourism and hospitality industries and the challenges that the tourism and hospitality industry in South Africa face. Pentravel is a well known tourism organisation situated in the Garden Route mall; their human-resource management philosophy is also discussed.

The role of Human Resource management has been changing rapidly over time. Ulrich (1997:79) outlined the perceived future roles of Human Resource managers in order to add value to organisations. These roles are: Strategic partner, Administrative expert, Employee champion, and Change agent.
Some of the challenges that organizations and managers face in the tourism and hospitality industry are recruiting, developing and maintaining a committed, competent, well-managed and well-motivated workforce which is focused on offering a high-quality ‘product’ to the increasingly demanding and discerning customer (Hotelier, 2008).
More challenges facing the tourism and hospitality industry are globalisation, Downsizing and de-layering, Knowledge management, Skills demand, and developing workplace flexibility (Nel et al, 2011).
2. Pentravel’s human-resource management philosophy
Pentravel is a national leisure travel company. The key focus of the HR philosophy is to align HR with the core business of the organisation. HR policies are aimed to balance the individual goals with the organisational goals.
Pentravels HR philosophy is entrenched in encouraging growth and development of individuals by realising their potential, rewarding and recognising hard work and having fun doing it.
HR entails providing a comprehensive administrative support to day-to-day operations ensuring the efficient delivery of salary payments, salary adjustments, recruitment processes, and the accuracy of employee data records. The HR professionals liaise closely with departments throughout the company providing an effective HR support service to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives.
Broad objectives of Human Resource Management:
* To source right talent at the right time at the right cost, contributing to the achievement of key strategies and objectives.
