Communication is all about passing messages on from person to person, or organization to organization. Proficient communication is a fundamental component in a Health and Social Care setting. For example: at a nursing home, a hospital, a nursery or a care home. People that have a job in the Health and Social Care field need effective communication skills in order to provide help for the many service users that they will meet whilst working. Having effective communication skills will help workers in this field to develop a trusting relationship between them and the users of Health and Social Care services. Verbal communication is also used in Health and Social Care environments. The role of verbal communication is to get messages and ideas across quicker. In order for verbal communication to be effective the tone of voice has to be strong, firm and confident, also. What is said must be loud and clear so that people can understand what is being said and the messages that are being conveyed.
Another form of communication is Interpersonal Interaction. Interpersonal interaction is a strong or close association between two or more people. This form of communication is important in this field because workers in the field will need to build a trusting relationship with the service user’s family. If interpersonal interaction didn’t happen in health and social care settings, then the service user’s family wouldn’t know whether or not the worker in the service should be trusted.
Non-verbal communication is transference of messages from one person to another without using speech or dialect. Some examples of non-verbal communication include: posture; facial expression; eye contact; appropriate use of touch; gestures, non-threatening use of body language and proximity (personal space). Another example of non-verbal communication is sign language. Sign language is a language designed for those who are unable to hear. Braille is also a form of non-verbal communication. It was invented for those who are visually impaired. Both Braille and sign language were invented so that people who feel compromised will not feel left out when the people around them in their communities are communicating.
Formal communication is a kind of verbal presentation or written information that follows certain rules and is free of any slang language. Formal communication generally tends to start with a greeting such as “hello, good afternoon”. Formal communication is a sign of mutual respect, it is more commonly used in more disciplined settings such as offices. People as a whole tend to use this form of communication in serious situations, or situations that they are no necessarily comfortable with. Informal language is a verbal presentation that is usually presented as a casual conversation in which the slang language may or may not be used. Informal, communication, on the other hand, is more likely to start with a greeting such as “hi, how are you?” people are most likely to use this communication method amongst their group of friends as they are more comfortable and do not feel as out of place as they would in a serious situation.
