Assignment 2.2: The Public Needs to Know
The current status of school meals is that they are full of fat and do not contain enough nutritious value. There are changes that need to be made in order to preserve the health and wellbeing of the children in society. The changes to be made are in the school breakfast and lunch programs. In order to effectively change the program you have to understand the economic issues, the population that is being served and their needs, the process and the benefits of the program.

Society’s health is a major reason for the need to have changes to school breakfasts and lunches. Children in the United States are prone to obesity. According to Crawford (2011), “Obesity rates have skyrocketed by 300% over the last 30 years, with dramatic implications for our children and our society.” (p. 1) Children are becoming obese by eating food that is too high in calories and unhealthy. Crawford states that “currently only 1%-2% of US children meet the recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the national nutrition standards for dietary intake necessary for optimal health” (2011, p.1). Currently children are spending more time at school than they do at home.
A special need that the school should consider is the children with disabilities, which can even include children with allergies. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service (2001), “A child with a disability must be provided substitutions in foods when that need is supported by a statement signed by a licensed physician” (p. 5). Children that eat breakfast and lunch at schools cannot be discriminated against because they have a disability. The school needs the statement signed by the doctor in order to prove that the child cannot eat regular school meals. The doctor will describe a meal plan to best suit the child; the school must follow the meal plan.
There is a process that needs to be made to allow the plan for better school meals to be put in action. The first step of the process is that the school board, taxpayers, and the government need to decide to proceed with healthier eating requirements during school hours. According to Nixon (2012), “the government estimates that the rules will add about $3.2 billion in costs to the program” (p.1). The school board, the government, and the taxpayers need to accept that eating healthier will be more costly than providing foods that are unhealthy. The second step is the proposal of the new school meal requirements. With the proposal comes the government, the school board, and the families of the children voicing their concerns along with their likes about the meal plans. After the proposal is made and the plan is accepted, the school board needs to ensure that schools properly follow and emplace the new requirements. This will be done by random checks of the school cafeterias. The regulations need to continue to be enforced to maintain a healthy society.
There are several benefits that will come from changing school lunch and breakfast programs. One major benefit that will come from changing school menus is that...
