The Fence: A Necessary Security Measure
Built in 2006 (Wikipedia), the Fence between the U.S and Mexico has raised many debates on whether it is necessary or xenophobic. In reality, the fence has greatly decreased illegal traffic, and the effectiveness of border control points has tremendously risen from 69.11% in 2006-the year the fence was built-to 83.98% in 2011 (Graham). Building a fence between the United States and Mexico is important for a better control of the border in order to fight plights such as drug smuggling and criminality.

Thanks to the fence the borders’ police has now the ability to arrest more efficiently any smuggling of humans or substances. A physical barrier is an additional obstacle to the entry of illegal traffic and makes the zone to control more specific. In fact, the number of illegal immigrants who could escape after being detected fell from 36 percent in 2006 to 6 percent in 2011 (Cave).
The fence, being an imposing physical obstacle, strengthens security measures. Yet, stricter security measures are responsible for the fall of illegal crossing. The Economist reports that Gordon Hanson, an economist at the University of California, San Diego, attributes a third of the drop in migration from the late 1990’s to 2010 to increased security means . Thus “walls and drones do make a difference” (The Economist). Therefore, the fence has been effective in reducing illegal smuggling.
The wall tightens security measures, which allows reducing illegal crossing. We must ask then why it is important to fight illegal immigration and smuggling by securing the border. An unsecure border can be a fertile ground for criminal activities such as drug dealing or terrorism. It could be the ideal place for criminals either terrorist or drug dealers who can take advantage to get around and flourish in the United States. The Southwest Border has been taken advantage of by terrorists to enter the country. CNS News quotes FBI Director saying that Kourani, an illegal alien who supplied Hezbollah with information, entered the country through the U.S.-Mexico border. Thus the border must be secured by all means.
