The IOM's Impact on the Future of Nursing
“In November of 2010, the Institute of Medicine issued a special report titled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, and Advancing health.”(The Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). Health care establishments should inspire nurses with an associate’s degree or diploma in nursing to continue their education by offering tuition reimbursement. They believe that educated nurses should get a salary differential and the opportunity for job progression. Loan forgiveness should be readily available. Within five years of procuring a baccalaureate in nursing, one should acquire a masters and or, doctorate. They feel at least ten percent should achieve these goals. Education prepares nurses to take leadership positions and these functions should be readily accessible to, and filled by nurses. Nursing education should incorporate leadership theory. Health care resolution should involve nursing on boards and management teams. Nurses should be at the center of health care decisions. Nursing should not just be about following orders and carrying out tasks.
In order for me to continue my career in nursing it is vital for me to further my education by receiving a bachelor’s degree or possibly procuring a master’s degree in nursing. By advancing my education I am allowing myself the opportunity to specialize in a number of different areas. Nurses need to be prepared for these changes that are coming. The expectation is to prevent diseases from occurring rather than treating the disease. Health promotion plays a key part.
