The Influence of Homework on Primary and Secondary school students
As population grows, the world is getting a lot more competitive than few years ago. Chiefly the students who are accepting basic education are all making great effort to achieve academic success. In the process of working hard to get to their aims, homework is always the steps lead them there. To a great extent, school assignments have not only greatly influenced elementary and high school students’ educational improvements, but also their health conditions.

Then newspapers like The New York Times against homework with editorials, and the American Child Health Association then categorized homework as child labor in 1930.While that was classified, New York City, San Diego as well as Sacramento public schools banned homework each forbade until fourth grade, eighth grade and through entire elementary school period. Sacramento kept that rule for 45 years, until 1961. (Winerip 1999) Consequently, when the quantity of homework is not under a reasonable level anymore, homework is child labor and it does damage children’s regular life.
Secondly, homework has also benefited and harmed both junior and senior high school students. On the one hand, as people all know homework is part of study, it is commonly believed in high school that the more homework students do the better score they will get, and the truth is exactly the same. Julian Betts (1996), a professor of economics of the University of California, San Diego, got an answer of how school assignments influence the grades. His surveys which he investigated on 6,000 middle and high school student for 5 years presented that "It appears to be the overall extent of (math) homework assigned and not the amount that is graded that matters," and the quality of homework does not influence math achievement on older children like 11-year-old. According to this survey, people know that practically as long as students are doing a lot of homework they won’t have a bad score, particularly the math-logical subjects. On the other hand, few people know that when the quantity of homework assigned is not rational anymore, homework just loses its efficiency and value. Mr. Chaika, an administrator of a school mentioned in his paper that professor Betts have told the Education World which homework would only affect students’ school study positively when it is reasonably given. "As long as homework levels are maintained at a reasonable level, and teachers in different subject areas carefully coordinate homework assignments to avoid overloading students, an hour of assigned homework appears to be about as effective as an hour spent in the classroom." (Betts 1996) Actually, high school students do feel in this way as well. More and more students from Beijing public junior and senior public high schools like Rendafuzhong, Beidafuzhong, Chaoyang district Foreign Language School and Beijing No.4 middle high school are getting the idea that it is only a waste of time to do too many exercises as the efficiency reduces rapidly.
Thirdly, school assignment, a way of study so effective, however has affected seriously negatively on children’s health condition.
