Gandalf and the 13 dwarves are also very important in this story, as they are with Bilbo almost all the time. Especially Thorin Oakenshield is very important. In the beginning Thorin doesn’t think much of Bilbo, but later he owes his life to him and has a lot of respect for the hobbit.
The main antagonist in this story is Smaug, the dragon. Because he is a dragon, he feels the need to hoard gold and other wealth. Even though he has no need nor use of the wealth he will kill for it to protect it and to get more. At a certain point in the book Bilbo takes something from the dragon, and he wants it back.
