The Green Lantern
Thousands of years ago a “green flame†fell upon Earth into ancient China. The voice of the flame prophesied that it would act three times: once to bring death, once to bring life, and once to bring power. A lamp maker fashioned the metal of the green meteor into a lamp, he was later killed by villagers out of fear and a punishment for what they thought was disrespect, only for them to be killed by a burst of the green flame. The lamp later came into the hands of a patient in a mental hospital. He fashioned the lamp into a modern lantern and the green flame returned him into ...view middle of the document...
Jordan became a founding member of the Justice League of America with one of the two active duty Green Lanterns on Earth’s sector, John Stewart. Jordan was also a member of the Green Lantern Corps.
Following the destruction of Green Lantern's hometown of Coast City in the early 1990’s, Jordan went insane and destroyed the Corps along with the Central Power Battery. He took on the name “Parallax†devastating the DC Universe for the next several years. In Green Lantern: Rebirth, it shows that Jordan was actually under the influence of a creature called Parallax. Parallax was a creature of pure fear that was imprisoned in the Central Power Battery and was eventually forgotten becoming the “yellow impurity†in the rings. Hal Jordan was one of the greatest Green Lanterns as was he one of the greatest enemies.
Guy Gardner was the second choice to replace Abin Sur as Green Lantern. Gardner was originally supposed to receive the ring but Hal Jordan was closer. He became the backup Green Lantern for Hal Jordan. Early on in his career as the Green lantern a tragic incident happened. A power battery blew up in his face putting him in a coma for years. Although he was emotionally unstable he was still able to fight heroically. Gardner is now apart of the Green Lantern Honor Guard and oversees the training of new Green Lanterns. Gardner also helped defend the planet of Oa during the “Blackest Night.â€
John Stewart was the fourth Green Lantern. He is DC’s first black costumed superhero and is the first black Green Lantern. He is also one of the first Green Lanterns to not wear a mask. Stewart became Hal Jordan’s backup when Guy Gardner was seriously injured. Stewart filled in occasionally for Jordan when unavailable. He soon became the Green Lantern full time when Jordan resigned for a long period of time. He married Katma Tui, the Green Lantern of the planet Korugar.
Stewart’s life began unraveling when first his ring became powerless through schemes of his arch rival Sinestro and his wife was murdered by Star Sapphire. He was also falsely accused of murder and theft and was jailed and tortured in South Nambia for a number of weeks. He escaped with his old ring that Hal Jordan helped restore. During his escape from South Nambia he released a terrorist and serial killer, putting innocent civilians in danger. Stewart and Jordan had a huge argument due to this. Shortly after, John left Earth and participated in Cosmic Odyssey Miniseries event. He was unable to prevent the destruction of the planet Xanshi. This left John a broken man and on the verge of committing suicide. After a length of time to heal, Jordan finally forgave himself, enabling him to become a better, stronger, more complex superhero.
