The Cold War
During World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were allies, fighting against Germany and Japan. During World War II, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill needed Stalin and the Soviet forces to help defeat Germany. When the “Big Three” met at the Yalta conference in Crimea, Soviet Union, in February 1945, Roosevelt was convinced that he still needed the support of Stalin to defeat the Japanese, because the United States had not yet tested the atomic bomb. The American Truman Doctrine of containment was meant to keep a lid on Soviet military adventurism that might spark a Third World War and a nuclear exchange. Despite revisionist historians trying to read all kinds of sinister subtext into our actions from 1945 to 1991 this simple objective was the only really important thing to the US during the Cold War. ...view middle of the document...
Americans were in fear that maybe communism would expand through the world and so they came up with the domino theory and president Truman came up with the Truman doctrine to help Greece and Turkey by giving them aid so they wouldn’t fall to communism, later on the passed the Marshall plan which gave aid to the allies and countries in need of it, in order for communism to be contained, in 1949 the soviet union made their first atomic bomb later that year china became communist, Americans were in great fear since now one of the most populous countries in the world had become communist . The Soviet Union made the Atomic Bomb and many Americans made holes underground just in case if the soviets ever used the bomb
NATO was formed to protect the perceived threat from Russia after WW2. In fact the 'Russian threat' was far more of a tool to control the US populace, in the same way that 'Al Queda' is now the reason for the loss of US civil liberties and ethics.
After the USSR disbanded, NATO, rather than similarly being disbanded, seems to have taken on the role they opposed of the USSR, of a world superpower interfering inappropriately with other countries. NATO is bombing civilian areas of Libya with AP missiles on the pretext of preventing killing of civilians, while withdrawing from the DR of Congo where the disgusting rape, torture and mutilation of innocent civilians on a vast scale is used by the forces they are supposed to be there to stop .
Some of the preparations that I would make would be to have a plan in place if this our home was threatened. I would have my safe places designated that I would be home, or have my current home prepped and prepared. I would also have one of my room stocked and locked with enough supplies and food to last at least 3 months. I would try to stay inside and as neutral as possible. My question that I am going to conclude this paper with is, How does the “Cold War” era affect politics and our lives today?
