Critical Thinking
Humanities ability to think critically has enabled us to secure a spot at the top of the food chain, but where has our thinking lead us since then? The opposable thumb is not the only characteristic that separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom; our greatest ability is to think about thinking, by analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing our thoughts in order to achieve goals. Through fabricated complexity the people disguise eminent consequences to persuade the ignorant masses into giving up more and more while receiving less in return, making the week weaker and the strong stronger.
Today we live in a world with more complex thoughts, which creates a more complex existence for us all. Not because of new natural threats but instead because of new unnatural threats created in our minds and acted out in our lives. John Milton wrote in Paradise Lost “The mind is its own place and in itself can make a hell of heaven or a heaven of hell,†Shakespeare wrote “We are such stuff as thoughts are made on.†Basically our thoughts create our environment, and even ourselves. If any person looks deep enough into himself or herself they become aware that they are not aware of many of their own thoughts. I consider myself for the most part in control of my life and thoughts. Well at least I thought I was, until I started asking myself the difficult questions no one likes, the kinds that don’t give reassuring answers. Questions like, “Do I believe something because it’s convenient or because it’s true?†Many times we walk around with biases or even prejudice controlling our thoughts without even knowing.
