Television Viewing and Child Development.
There are hundreds of television channels offered by cable companies. What is your child watching? A child sitting with a remote in front of a television could be watching anything! Are you aware of the potential effects that television can have on a child’s development? Television has the potential to be dangerous in a child’s development. Some of these beneficial behaviors can be: sharing, cooperation, math skills, reading skills, and social skills. Television can provide the opportunity to explore whole new worlds, and other cultures. Children can learn a lot about different traditions and cultures. Television also exposes children to ideas, and different cultures, that they may never encounter in their own community.
Teachers utilize educational television programs to enhance children’s learning. Teachers use some instructive television programs to promote reading instructions for their students. Some curriculums in schools incorporate studying of movies, plays or other television programs. Enabling and interesting children who are learning these subjects to develop critical thinking. Teachers advise them to watch certain television shows, dissect their plots and debate on the various ways and strategies used by the cast to solve problems (Van Evra 2008).
Our generations are becoming more aware of impact that television has on a child’s development. There are a number of new television show that promote positive developmental skills such as: reading, writing, spelling, math, and problem solving all being incorporated into newer cartoons. These cartoons are enjoyable for the children to watch while learning new things. Some television shows such as Sesame Street, and Barney have pro-social effects on children. Studies carried out have shown that kids who have watched these programs have benefited in gaining such virtues such as: sharing and cooperation, understanding feelings, showing sympathy and kindness towards others. This behavior is mostly prevalent in families where parents watch these types of shows with their children, and encourage selfless behavior. These effects on the development of children have been seen to endure through adolescence. (Parke & Clarke-Stewart 2011).
Negative Effects of watching television on a Child’s Development. Television is an important source of knowledge about other people and the more time children spend on them, the more they tend to perceive social reality that reflect what they see on Television . Unfortunately, televisions representation of real life is inaccurate; hence kids will tend to underestimate the degree of danger and crime in the real world. This may take a catastrophic toll on their later years. The negative effects that emerge from children watching excessive television at a tender age as discussed in the paper include; misleading perception of reality as depicted in some television shows, kids also tend to engage in crime and violence, and sexuality, which they perceive through programs that incorporate such activities.
