UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE AND CHARACTERISTICS

OF ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

1.1 Compare and contrast the roles of the teacher and the learning support practitioner in assessment of learners' achievements.

Although the teacher and the learning support practitioner work together to provide all pupils with the best possible knowledge, their roles in that process differ. It is the teacher who has the duty to plan the lessons to suit learners needs and to set out clear objectives and goals so that the pupils' progress is monitored. Both the teacher and the TA are involved in carrying out the assessment by:
➢ the use of open-ended questions that encourage children to present their ideas without being guided by an adult. This method is good to investigate the understanding of the topic;
➢ by observing students which allows to gain a broad understanding of an each individual student, how they work, how they adopt a strategy to solve more difficult tasks;
➢ by listening to students and descriptions of their work, as well as the chosen methods, which allows the teacher to get familiar with the way of learner's thinking;
➢ by checking the understanding of the subject by asking questions that verify knowledge;
➢ by engaging students to check their knowledge, so-called self-assessment.

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to think about what they have learned and relate it to the learning objectives. They should also think about how it may be useful to in the future. Formative Assessment is a continuous process.
Summative assessment is another way to verify students' understanding. This is a periodic, formal way to check the level of knowledge acquired during the period . It makes an overall evaluation of achievements and abilities in learning program. It is always formally recorded and informs others about level of pupils' work. This type of assessment is typically used to assign students a course grade. Summative assessments are eveluative.

Assessment for learning is a part of teaching and learning process. It helps learners to achieve quality and productive teaching through their learning and encourages them to take responsibility for it. AfL is a very good tool for teachers as it allows to recognise pupil's level and plan further action.
To be effective AfL sould start from sharing the learning objectives with pupils at the beginning or, where appropriate, during the lesson. This may help children to get an idea about the current goals and encourage to focus on them. Learning objectives can be used as the basis for questioning. Showing other pupils' work that had met the criteria will make recognizing and understanding standards they are aiming for a lot easier. Others' work can also be a good example or model of what it should look like. It may be worth to display pupils' work both in progress and finished product.
