Taxi Driver Essay

1089 words - 5 pages

There are quite a few great movies that came out in the 1960’s, The Great Escape, Bullitt, and A Fistful of Dollars. Another exceptional movie of the 60’s was the movie The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman. The movie embodies the issues that were part of the 60’s and the conflicts that were faced during that period in time. There was a lot of exploration of how people could be their own individual and express themselves as individuals.
I am going to discuss the plot and the story of the movie. I want to discuss what makes this movie special and memorable for the audience such as the acting and camera techniques used. Also talk about the soundtrack that was used for the film and what ...view middle of the document...

Another that stands out is the scene at the church where he breaks up the wedding and runs off with Elaine, his reaction to the aftermath was quite inspiring to me. Anne Banncroft was great as the seductive and unsettled Mrs. Robinson, she reminded me of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. The scene where they meet at the hotel and get a room shows us a person who caring yet unsure of her love for her husband. The scene were Benjamin gets into her house and asks her where Elaine is in which she replies that she is calling the police to arrest him. She feels jealous that her daughter is truly in love with Benjamin so she tries to make sure that Benjamin suffers for leaving her.
Katherine Ross played the role of Elaine Robinson and her portrayal of a young woman trying to find herself was excellent. When Benjamin took her to the strip club she was visibly upset which any woman would be although when Benjamin explains the situation to her she is hesitant but forgives him. The emotion of her in the scene is almost genuine as if it really happened as is the scene with the where she tells him that her mother said he raped her. She allows Benjamin to tell her what really happened and when she sees the emotion of Benjamin she realizes he is telling the truth.
Next, let’s discuss the soundtrack of the movie that was all done by Simon and Garfunkel. The folk rock melodies of Simon and Garfunkel give the mood of 60’s throughout the film. In the first scene where Benjamin gets off the plane the song the sound of silence plays and it gives you the happy feeling that Benjamin is happy to be home. The song is played a lot throughout the movie, I can remember the scene where Benjamin is laying on his inflatable raft in the pool with his glasses on while the song is playing. One of the other songs that was used is Scarborough fair, the song fits in well in the scene where Benjamin tries to follow Elaine to a nearby college in his Alpha Romeo Spider. He feels as if he...
