Over the past decade, the hotel industry is trying to find ways to become more socially and environmentally acceptable. Hotels alone take up about 5 billion square feet of space and with over 5 million guest rooms. Along with that, they accumulate about $5 billion in energy usage. With people using it for leisure or business trips, they can help contribute to the environment. People traveling for business altogether make around 400 million business trips every year. Aside from LEED, many hotels are using carbon footprinting to enhance sustainability. Carbon footprinting is a calculation made by "the total sets of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or individual." Instead of working separately, many hotels are coming together to help with one common goal: standardizing carbon accounting in the hospitality industry by using carbon footprinting. The hotels involved are Accor, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott International Inc., MGM Resorts International, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., Premier Inn (Whitbread Group) and Wyndham Worldwide. It does not take that long to come up with the calculation, about 2 hours roughly. All they need Is their suppliers and energy bills. This allows consumers to believe down the road as more hotels come together to advertise this, that the industry is striving to make hotels more sustainable on their behalf.
