Until recently we have just assumed, based on the fact that a student has graduated high school, that they are going on to college with the basic abilities of reading, writing, and arithmetic, yet we are finding that 40 percent of students entering college do not have these basic skills at the college level. We also assumed that if a student obtained a Bachelor’s degree, they were qualified for entry level work. Yet surveyed employers are stating that “that they are not pleased with the level of critical thinking, analytic reasoning, and writing skills recent graduates possess”. And let us not forget the pressure teachers are under to see results in student performance. As an example gone bad, in Atlanta, a handful of teachers were prosecuted for a cheating scandal regarding standardized testing. The teachers were going back and erasing incorrect answers and replacing them with correct ones. As a result, that year there was a huge percentage boost in the number of passing students…which eventually initiated the inquiry as to ‘why’ there was such a large increase. For an already underpaid profession, the educators felt pressured in that their own advancement was contingent on a students’ intellectual execution, many of which were under-skilled and under-performing.
Dr. Roger Benjamin, President of the Council for Aid to Education, states there are multiple reasons why it is imperative that educators place more scrutiny on the “only relevant metric: student learning outcomes”. He believes that it is extremely important that students are deemed ready to graduate if they meet minimum proficiency levels, not just if the student has obtained the required number of credits to graduate.

There are multiple ways to assess student learning, some of which include open-ended or constructed response items, performance-based items/events, projects/experiments or portfolio collections. There are two established methods of assessing student achievement that will be discussed in this paper. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is a set of academic standards in mathematics and English which outline what criteria a student should achieve at the end of each grade. They were created to determine that students graduate with the expertise required to succeed in college and/or career. Currently forty-three states and the District of Columbia have adopted and are practicing the Common Core curriculum.
