Stress Management Through Effective Leadership

Before taking this class, I thought that stress was the sole topic and just that. To my surprise, stress management is actually comprised of a variety of elements. I compare it to a pie (the “stress”) cut into triangular shaped pieces (e.g. internal management, death of an officer, dangerous situations, misconduct, sleep, testifying in court, effects on the family) forming a whole circle. This is a lot of pressure put on law enforcement officers because it is believed that there is absolutely no room for “error” to the eyes of the public (Anderson, Swenson, & Clay, 1995). I believe that if the relationship between subordinates and their supervisors are open, officers will be forward with their mistakes. It should be assured that such confession would be scrutinized before any negative course of action is brought up. Supervisors should do their best to help those who error makes the right decisions next time.
This brings me to the next important subject, which was a completely new level to me in terms of balance between subordinates and supervisors. Two words: trust and accountability. I learned from this class how important it is that supervisors get involved with their officers on a 1:1 ration by speaking to them, listening to them, observing them, and sharing experiences. This type of bond will eventually form trust. A personal connection between my superiors and me never existed in my past work experiences because my personal life was just that: personal. My former bosses and I never got close enough to talk about anything other than work. The only two things they knew about me was that I was married and had two children. In order to truly understand and know the needs of employees, supervisors must spend meaningful time with them. There are varieties of ways supervisors can get involved. For example, maybe once a week a chief can go out on patrol. He puts on his uniform, takes the stars off his collar, and collaborates with an officer on patrol. His actions show the entire department that he does not consider himself above them by doing the same work that he asks his officers to perform and demonstrate his accountability to his employees. Accountability includes all activities, whether on or off duty. People adhere to morale principle, which in fact means that subordinates lose respect for their supervisors if they see them participating in inappropriate conduct (Gilmore, 2007). Participating in inappropriate conduct implies that supervisors must not care. Action defines leadership. Leaders do what they say they would do. Officers want to know that if their supervisors see something that is not right, they will have to courage to speak up, to defend, and to take action.
I would definitely apply the information I learned in this course to my current job. For law enforcement officers, the weight they have on their shoulders is an incredible amount of pressure.
