This is because stereotype threat is thought to arise from the particular situation rather than from an individual's personality traits or characteristics. Since most people have at least one social identity which is negatively stereotyped, most people are vulnerable to stereotype threat if they encounter a situation in which the stereotype is relevant.
A few researchers said, that stereotype can lead to a vicious circle of diminished confidence, poor performance and loss of interest in the relevant area of achievement. For your information, the stereotype threat cannot not be erase but it can be prevented in many ways. Other than that, stereotype threat has also been shown to alter professional aspirations and to produce more guarded ways that members of different groups interact with each other.
SUMMARY OF THE CASE
This case explains how understanding â€œstereotype threatâ€ -- the fear of being judged according to a negative stereotype that can help managers create positive environments for diverse employees. These problems give an impact on organizational regarding to their performance on tests used for admission and selection decisions.
In this case, it states the situation when the stereotype threat occurs in our live include in the organization such between the gender, human physical and so on. The negatively stereotyped group underperforms when the stereotype is seen as relevant to the task.
Before we conclude, the case have been stated the example of stereotype threat that happen in our life. For example the comparison between black student and white students, the low socio-economic status, older individuals, people with a head injury history, white people and black people and the significant point is the judgment between woman and man. This stereotype threat is more focus onto the gender stereotype.
Then the condition for stereotype threat happen is base on two conditions which is task difficulty and personal task investment. From the case, we can say that when the task is difficult, stereotype threat evokes concern over performance. For second condition, personal task investment refers on how important doing well on the task to the individual self esteem. In the same point, the case also show us the process of stereotype threat and how the relevance of that. In summary, these conditions make stereotype threat more likely for members of negatively stereotyped groups; the employee is invested in doing well, on a difficult, stereotype relevant task, where the context reinforces the stereotype.
Then, in this case also it mention on how the strategies for reduce stereotype threat. These strategies, demonstrated to be effective in laboratory studies, all involve changing the conditions for stereotype threat. Having good strategies available to cope with challenges makes the task seem less difficult and less frustrating.
