MS is not the only disease that scientists have been able to cure. Stem cells have shown promise in being able to cure diseases, such as, Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gherig’s disease, Hodgkin’s disease, and virtually every form of cancer. With research allowing this, scientists are pushing for more support from the people, as well as the government. Scientists and doctors in a similar way recognize the potential of stem cells, and the ability they have to save lives. Until people understand the potential of stem cells, these scientists and doctors will continue to perform their research and procedures without drawing attention to their actions. Nevertheless, they believe in what they’re doing and refuse to stop saving lives. (Steinberg 2000)
After seeing these facts one might believe that stem cells are the wonder drug and can cure any disease. This may appear to be true, but stem cells are derivative from a developing embryo or fetus. This is the only place to find undifferentiated cells. Regrettably, a developing human needs these cells; the process of removing them kills the unborn child. This caused an outcry from pro-life activists. The argument is that scientists are killing fetuses to improve the condition of living patients. Some say that using stem cells in this manner is equivalent to farming body parts. Doctor’s took an oath to save the lives of their patients, and stem cell therapy is a way to do so. Instead of incinerating aborted tissues, there is no reason that doctors should not be able to use them to save an existing life. (Siegel 2008)
Because of the closeness that stem cells have to abortion, the government had a difficult time deciding whether or not scientists should perform research on them. To terminate one life to save another is a huge decision that one must make. This is more an ethical decision...
