Statistics Essay

In order to provide a better understanding, solution, or proof to turn a hypothesis into a theoretical practice; data must be collected to provide a confirmation. Since the beginning of time that man has been able to remember, we have collected data whether through stories that have been passed through generations, to actual recordings that began on stone tablets and currently remain saved in computers, books, and physical memory. We have relied on the collection of data to make decisions that propel the human race into the next era of technical development and business growth. The type of data varies as it can either be quantified or qualitative to meet the needs and purpose of the ...view middle of the document...

Qualitative data is a slower processes that are more involved, requiring extreme attention to detail as qualitative data is used to make critical decisions to determine methods of treatment, court rulings, and government laws that affects the entire body of its citizen’s.
Quantitative deals less with personal data and more with the numerical counts of research data to define an answer as to whether the hypothesis is either a null or alternate hypothesis. “Quantitative research gathers data in numerical form which can be put into categories, or in rank order, or measured in units of measurement.  This type of data can be used to construct graphs and tables of raw data”. (McLeod, 2008) Consisting of closed questions, quantitative data is structured into categories that are defined based on the premise of the research study. The researcher is strictly limited to the “frequency of response” (Schindler, 2013, p.166) in order to establish a precise measurement of the data received. “Quantitative research is often used for theory testing, requiring that the researcher maintain a distance from the research to avoid biasing results.” (Schindler, 2013, p.146)
While qualitative and quantitative clearly have distinct differences in their approaches for gathering data, both possess noticeable drawbacks to their research methods and create a just cause for concern. “Quantitative research often "forces" responses or people into categories that might not "fit" in order to make meaning. Qualitative research, on the other hand, sometimes focuses too closely on individual results and fails to make connections to larger situations or possible causes of the results.” (Colorado State Univ., 2013) The methodologies of qualitative and quantitative research provide research tools to confirm the theory; the only issue of concern is addressing the problem to define the question that determines which method of research you will use. For quite some time, the majority of research was based on the quantitative method as it was less expensive, opinionated, and easily tested to prove the theory. Recently, based on the undesired results of the quantitative methods alone, research is now being triangulated to include qualitative and quantitative methods in order to provide a more accurate range on research results.
“Rather than discounting either approach for its drawbacks, researchers should find the most effective ways to incorporate elements of both to ensure that their studies are as accurate...
