Special Education and the Principles of NCLB
The No Child Left behind Act, (NCLB 2001), was designed to raise the standard for education in the United States. This act has five core principles that have been the foundation of the NCLB act which have each had pros and cons.
States are responsible for being accountable for goal setting as well as for showing improvement of test results. Due to this emphasis schools and teachers cannot adopt new teaching methods that may have a negative outcome on students. Students cannot be viewed as “guinea pigs” to have new methods tested on them as well as teaching programs or parenting programs that may be offered through the school.
The expanded options for children that attend low performing schools was intended to allow parents choose to have their students transported to a different school, within the district that is performing better than their school, if their school fails to meet standards for two years in a row. Although this principle is intended to be positive there are many cons about it. Schools should have help within the first year that their test scores are not meeting standards. Also by allowing students to be transported to other schools there is a greater chance for classroom overcrowding, which would intern allow students to not learn at their potential. Diverse learner’s classroom needs should be taken into account with low performing schools and his or her transportation needs. Diverse learners may need a contained classroom or aids within the classroom, if a school is overcrowded due to low performing schools this can make it difficult on the needs of diverse learners.
