1.Southwest ha dominado el modelo de bajo precio y tiene los resultados financieros para probarlo. ¿Por qué no los de otras compañías aéreas copiar el modelo de Southwest?

Southwest es una compañía aérea de bajo costo que se enfoca en un servicio rápido y sencillo, y sin lujos. Nunca ha servido comidas, no tiene reservas de asientos avanzadas, y vuela sólo aviones Boeing. Estas decisiones han ayudado Southwest ser flexible en estos tiempos que ha estado en decrecimiento los pasajeros causado por los ataques terroristas del 9/11 y la crisis económica mundial. Southwest es una compañía orientada a las personas y utiliza esa orientación para aprovechar sus ventajas. Reduce los costos por tener empleados que trabajan para una empresa que aman, en vez de por un simple cheque de pago al final de la semana. La compañía también planea para el futuro y no tiene miedo a asumir los riesgos necesarios para mantenerse por delante de la competencia. Al mismo tiempo los clientes consideran que el precio del pasaje como uno de los factores más importantes a la hora de viajar, es por esto que las aerolíneas de “servicio completo” no son capaces de competir con las aerolíneas de bajo costo. Es por estas razones que no es tan sencillo copiar todas las prácticas que incurre Southwest, pueden copiar una que otra pero no todas. Su innovación y iniciativas son los que lo mantienen estable.

2. ¿Qué riesgos Southwest enfrenta? ¿Puede seguir prosperar como una aerolínea de bajo costo cuando dura económica veces golpean ?

Los riesgos que Southwest Airlines podrían enfrentar, es que al utilizar su precio como posicionamiento los clientes podrían relacionar pasajes baratos con equipos de vuelo de mala calidad. Por esta razón para mantener a los pasajeros confiando en ellos, Southwest podría verse obligado a desprenderse de su estructura de costos minimalista proporcionando servicios superiores tales como entradas y la transferencia de equipaje.

Otro riesgo sería la escasez de aviones disponibles. Esta escasez también está haciendo subir los costos de arrendamiento en un momento en el cual las aerolíneas ya estan afectadas por los precios del combustible.
