SSI pays benefit based on the financial need while Social Security Disability Insurance pays the benefit based on their contribution to Social Security taxes.
2.2 Children Benefits
Social Security Administration in United State provides social security for disabled children. The benefit is eligible whether the child is adopted, dependent stepchild or even from parent’s father and mother earnings. However, there are certain requirements in order to be eligible for Social Security Income benefits (SSI). For the parents, one of the partners must be disabled and retired and entitled for social security or one of the partner died after having worked long enough and he or she paid for the social security taxes. For the child, that child is unmarried and younger than 18 years old. He or she must be a full time student not higher than 12 grade or disabled and have started before 22 years old. In order to apply for the benefits, the parents need to bring along the birth certificate, parent’s and child’s Social Security numbers and extra documents needed are depends on type of benefit involved.
2.3 Survivors Benefits
The survivors benefits is a social security made for when a family member dies. Some deceased’s family members may be entitled to receive social security benefits after the deceased has worked long enough to be made qualified under the social protection. It is a lump-sum payment of 255$ to the surviving spouse. If no surviving spouse the child may is entitle for the payment. However, there are certain procedure that need for the family members to comply with. Such procedures include when the death needs to be reported as soon as possible. But in most cases the funeral home or the funeral director will make the report. And family member of the deceased must provide the funeral director with the deceased’s social security number. There are also certain family members are eligible to apply for the benefits such are, a widow or a widower of at least 60 years of age or 50 for the disable. A widow or a widower caring the deceased child of below 16 years old. An unmarried child of the age below 18 or a full time student in secondary or elementary. An unmarried child with disability that starts at the age before 22 years old. And last but not least parents at the age of at least 62 years old being dependent on the deceased for at least half of the deceased’s income.
