Social psychology studies elements of life situations. Social psychology dives deep into how people analysis and influence one another. Social psychology is a study concerning why a person thinks about, relates to, and influences others. Social psychology consists of the study of learning how people see themselves and others. Social psychology studies people’s beliefs, attitudes, thought process, and judgment making. Social psychology influences how genetic factors and society contribute to who people become, and how he or she interacts with each other. An example is establishing a way of dressing, religious beliefs, and food. Broad scope is the span of social psychology. Broad scope of social psychology can be considered the covering under which the research and studies fall into the field. Broad scope surrounds the basics of a person’s behavior and how he or she can be influenced by a group. This consists of his or her personal emotions and his or her actions to the trails of society (Fiske, 2010). The search of wisdom looks to progress the condition of people, to recognize the affect on human behavior and make sense of the human society. Solving issues such as being pressured by peers and groups is the drive for social psychology (Fiske, 2010). The scientific methods are the vital parts of all psychological fields. Social psychology’s scientific theories are created and tested for reliability and validity of understanding behaviors and how the behaviors relate to society (Fiske, 2010).
Concept of Situationism
Situationism is the perception of social psychology’s theory that the framework of a scenario is of importance. Personality only is not the influence of the human behavior, and it is the social context, or experience that person’s behavior reacts to or is influenced. A person’s personality is often looked at as the reason for his or her behavior. A person’s behavior is influenced more directly within the social context (Fiske, 2010). Fiske offers the impact of a social situation by showing an experiment Lewin conducted, in which he tried to influence women to purchase organ meat rather than commonly used meats. Lewin attempted to get women to change be using a speaker who offered positive information, recipes, and personal experiences. The results were low, but when the women were put within their social circle, using the organ meat, there was an increase in the results (Fiske, 2010).
Five core Social Motives
The core social motives are the base morals and a person’s beliefs that determine how he or she thinks and behaves around other people in social situations. Belonging, controlling, understanding, trusting, and self-enhancing are the five core social motives (Fiske, 2010). Belonging is a person’s motive of needing to be needed by others and becoming a part of another’s existence. Controlling is a person’s motive of needing to some ability to predict the outcome.
