Psychology covers many topics and conducts different types of research to understand the function and development of humans. Social psychology, however, places a focus on individuals and how they think about, relate to, and perceive others. Social thinking, influences, and relations are the main concepts of social psychology that also construct main ideas to make remembering the concepts easier. In social influence, the first idea pertains to behavior shaping. People have a need to belong or connect with their social surroundings. The events or behaviors of a person’s surroundings develop his or her behavior at that moment. When a person loses a family member or close friend, some people show a behavior of compassion for them. The second idea of social influences shows how, in that same event, other people may not show compassion or other feelings. The second idea pertains to personality dispositions shaping behavior. This idea means personality also affects behavior. Two people may have a different behavior toward an even because they have different personalities. Social relations pertain to the interactions of people. The first idea in social relations describes how social behavior is biological. Biological behavior passes from one generation to the next to help people survive. The second idea states that people show negative and positive actions and feeling toward other people. People show different emotions when they are around certain people. A person may show a positive attitude toward others when he or she is in a good mood or around other people in good moods. Another person may show a negative attitude when he or she is in a bad mood or around other people also in bad moods. Social psychology deals with the individual and how he or she perceives others whereas other forms of psychology cover other parts of psychology.
Social psychology differs from other forms of psychology in different ways; however, it may have a use in the other forms of psychology. Clinical psychology may use social psychology to understand behaviors or mental disorders. Clinical psychology focuses on abnormal behavior and mental illnesses with the intent to make a change. In clinical psychology, psychologists aim to help people cope with their mental, behavioral, and emotional problems (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012).
