“Perhaps, Americans have moved from a print-based culture to an aural/visual one, preferring electronic media for information, distraction, and entertainment” (Media and Popular Culture, 426). In the past few years social media has been a staple to the everyday life of our society. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Tumblr have become the most used websites and apps used every day. Every site is different and every site has its similarities, but there are a few elements that make them better than the other websites. Twitter has become wildly recognized in the Television Realm. When award show or well watched television programs comes on the twitter-sphere go wild. It seems as if everyone is tuned into the show. Everybody are tweeting the same things, and at however long the program lasts for everyone seems to be getting along and sharing the same mind set. Those are the moments the twitter community loves. "Without the Internet, the Golden Globes wouldn't be fun to watch," says Daniel Manu, the site director of Television without Pity sates in an article written by Stephanie Goldberg on CNN. He then goes on to say “Fans and critics can instantly respond on Twitter and comment back to these shows. In a way, awards shows are more fun now”. Twitter has become a staple to award shows and television shows, especially with Twitter’s Trending Topics. The Trending Topics allows users to know what’s being most talked about. It represented by keywords or hashtags. “The “#” symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages” defined by Twitter.com itself. People use the hashtag symbol before a relevant keyword or phrase in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in a Twitter search. Twitter has unique qualities that separate it from other social media, those qualities such as the trending Topics, and verified users led to twitter’s rapid success.
Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking website founded by David Karp and is now owned by Yahoo! Inc. “Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. It allows its users to Post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos from your browser, phone, desktop, email or wherever you happen to be.You can customize everything, from colors to your theme's HTML.” according to the about section on the Tumblr website. Once becoming a part of the Tumblr community and learning the ends and out of the site chance are the consumer would become addicted to the site. In article on Forbes.com guest post written by Hayes Davis, founder and CEO of Union Metrics, which provides Twitter and Tumblr analytics tools, Hayes states “Consumers in the critical 18-34 year old demographic are hooked on Tumblr, with the average visitor spending 1.5 hours per month on the site.” Tumblr allows its user to be bloggers and in a way create their own website, [insert blog name here].Tumblr.Com. Tumblr users consider themselves as a private community, Tumbland; there are even rules for Tumblr users to follow. One of the rules that are frequently reblogged around Tumblr is “whatever happens on Tumblr stays on Tumblr”. The rules of Tumblr of course are optional and are not meant to be taken seriously at all, but it provides it users with a feeling of ownership that Tumblr is theirs.
