Atlantis:
The lost continent has been discussed found and discounted by many people through time or since the time of Plato.

The Location of Atlantis has been placed all over the world:
* Crete
* Santorini
* Western Turkey
* Antarctica
* Gilbralter Strait
* South China Sea
* North America
* Bolivia
* Etc.…

The legend of Atlantis is the product of the imagination of the Greek philosopher Plato (429/428- 347 B.C).

Story of Atlantis presented in two dialogues:
- Timaeus and Critias

Stories are told in a 421 B.C. setting where Socrates is discussing the perfect moral society.

In Critias, Atlantis is described, as a 15mi wide ...view middle of the document...

C. book about the history of Athens makes no mention of its conflict with and defeat of Atlantis.

No ancient Greeks mention the Athenian/ Atlantean conflict because they knew it to be fiction. Furthermore, Athens doesn’t begin to assert itself in the world until circa 1100 B.C.

Olof Rudbeck, a professor of medicine in Sweden, located Atlantis in Sweden during the late 17th century.

Ignatius Donnelly launches the modern myth of Atlantis, writing a book about his research in 1882.

Mapping of the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean supports his cause… at least in his mind.

Donnelly was a representative of MN in Congress.

Donnelly (1882) believes the pyramids of Egypt and the pyramids of Mesoamerica can be traced to the same source: Atlantis, with the Atlantean showing each culture how to construct pyramids. Conflicting with this idea are the facts that pyramids from the two continents 1) look different, 2) were used differently- one for burial chambers, and the other as temples and burial chambers- and 3) the two were constructed at different times: Egyptian pyramids from 5,000 to 4,000 years ago while those of Mesoamerica are less than 3,000 years old.

Donnelly (1882) recognized that peoples of the Old and New Worlds were dependent on agricultural economies for their subsistence, and therefore this indicates that these cultures were derived from a common source.

What items or traits of culture didn’t Donnelly discuss in terms of Atlantis?

Most recently James M. Allen (2009) has located Atlantis along Lake Tauca south of Lake Titicaca in the Altiplano of the Bolivian Andes.

The Bimini Wall, a geological feature located off the Bimini coast in the Caribbean that has been misidentified by non- geologist as a wall built by Atlanteans.

Edgar Cayce, “the sleeping prophet” thought the island of Bimini was a remnant of Atlantis.

Cayce also did “life readings” of approximately 1600 people of whom 700 had lived past lives on Atlantis according to him.
