How can soccer be effectively promoted in the United States to give it more status as a major sport?
Here in the United States of America, there are a lot of major sports we adore, idolize, and watch on television. These such sports include professional football (NFL), professional baseball (MLB), and also professional basketball (NBA) as the top sports here in the United States of America. Here in America, for some reason, we do not give soccer, also known as futbol in other countries, a fighting chance to be a top major sport in our country. If we showcase the European Leagues on channels such as ESPN here in the United States, I think that more Americans would get much more excited about United States soccer because they are watching the best of the best play in this exciting and evolving sport.
This part leads into the second solution of marketing. The European Leagues and Major League Soccer are not showcased on the major sports networks such as ESPN, ABC, and CBS. Instead, they are showcased on channels such as the Fox soccer channel which you have to pay a monthly subscription on DirectTV. I know this because I do not get these channels unless I pay that monthly subscription to watch the premier soccer games. The majority of Americans will not pay for this channel because most likely it is not cheap. You probably have to buy a sports package along with the channel. If you make these games the focus of television in the United States and give everyone access and to the best soccer programming for free, more and more Americans would start watching this sport and it would grow the popularity of this sport tremendously. The problem with not having free channels provide premier soccer games is that more people will pirate the soccer games illegally off the internet. So, if they start providing the soccer channels for free, that station would make money off the profit of ads that are provided for that station. That situation is much better, in my opinion, than people getting the game for free of pirating websites.
