Snow White
Fairy Tale Comparison

The story of young girl forced to flee from her home due to the jealously of her step-mother has been told in many languages in a variety of ways since its first publication by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. Storytellers capture their audiences by relating the common man’s plight to that of Snow White. To gain a greater understanding of this story, it is best to examine three versions that have been told at significantly different times within society. The original story “Little Snow-White” by the Brothers Grimm, Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, and Disney’s “Mirror Mirror” serve as inspiration when discussing the story, language, art direction, ...view middle of the document...

The Queen surrounds herself with only those who see her as the most beautiful in all the land and seeks constant affirmation of that fact. The story turns when the Queen does not like what she learns when she asks her most faithful servant, the Mirror in both the Grimm tale and the 1937 Disney version, “Who is the fairest of them all” (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937). In “Mirror Mirror” (Disney, 2012), the Queens reflection is her most trusted source. The Queen learns through this magic that “Snow White is the fairest in the land” (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937). Enraged, the Queen summons her huntsman to kill Snow White, but alas he does not as Snow White has begged for her life saying that she will “run away into the wild forest, and never come home again” (Taylor, 1884). Snow White comes upon a tiny cottage deep in the forest where she will seek solace from the beasts and her fear. The cottage belongs to seven tiny men known as dwarfs who are thieves (Mirror Mirror, 2012) or possibly miners (Taylor, 1884)(Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937). Although sad and alone, Snow White earns her keep with the dwarfs by cooking and cleaning their little cottage deep in the forest. The Queen learns from her magic mirror that Snow White is not dead but indeed alive and still more beautiful than she. The Queen creates a plan to rid the land of the beauty that is Snow White. In the 1937 Disney version the Queen uses magic and a poisoned apple to bring Snow White her fate, in the original story the Queen dresses as a beggar woman to thwart her through a “stay-lace” and later a poisoned apple, in the 2012 Disney version the Queen uses a magic “love potion” on the prince that makes him fall madly in love with her not Snow White. In all versions there is a grand scene where the evil Queen and all of her evil magic is defeated by the love of Snow White and her prince. This is discovered through their kiss of true love. It is notable that in “Mirror Mirror”, Snow White’s father, the King, is returned to her as he was one of the victims of the Queen’s evil magic. This is one of Disney’s touches for the newest generation of Snow White fans.
Stories are often told in a similar language to that of their intended audience, so that connections to the characters are made with ease and comfort. In the original telling of Snow White, the brothers Grimm did not use contractions when writing, we know this because they do not appear in the translations. This is reflective of that time period where both the written and spoken word were formal and eloquent. Where as in Disney’s 2012 version the dialogue had its formal components that related to the character who was speaking and was executed with humor in its cadence through the delivery of the words being spoken. The Queen in all versions is elegant and firm in tone, where Snow White comes across as naive and unsure, and the dwarfs are genuine and comedic. Language helps us relate to the story on a...
