Sleep deprivation is defined as a sufficient lack of restorative sleep over a cumulative period so as to cause physical or psychiatric symptoms and affect routine performances of tasks. (WebMd) Sleep deprivation can lead to harsh physical and or mental problems and should be taken seriously. We are now living in a 24/7 world where we are constantly busy and there is work, television and electronics keeping us up. Getting the proper amount of sleep should be taken very seriously so that there are no harmful effects to your body or mind. This seemed an easier way out or at least easier to understand then the actual cause which was sleep deprivation. The gentleman at the wheel had slept only 6 hours in a 48 hour period and that lack of sleep was the cause of the missed turn and ultimately the accident. There was wrongful accusing of the captain who had consumed alcohol when the cause was not from alcohol consumption. Dement and Vaughan write “But instead, the poor captain has been hounded for nearly a decade.” (Dement and Vaughan 499) This is a devastating example of why everyone must make sleep a priority, because in this situation an accident caused much harm to the environment, animals and shame to a man who didn’t deserve it. In “A Third of Life” by Paul Martin he states “Sleep has become increasingly devalued in the 24-hour society.” (Martin 464) People do not realize the importance of the proper amount of sleep and suffer the consequences due to the lack of.

In order to prevent major disasters or accidents from occurring due to sleep deprivation we must first understand what sleep is. Sleep is a natural state of rest for the mind and body it is a part of our everyday lives and we cannot just put it off or ignore it. In the essay “A Third of Life” by Paul Martin, Martin states that “It is the single most common form of human behavior and you will spend a third of your life doing it - 25 years or more, all being well.” (Martin 462) As we humans need to eat and breathe, we also need to sleep. In the essay “Improving Sleep” by Lawrence Epstein he states “Sleep decisions are a quality-of-life issue.” (Epstein 482), if you want to maintain a good quality-of-life you must achieve the proper amount of sleep to do so. There is too much reliance on caffeinated beverages, alarm clocks, and sleep aid medications. Putting off sleep with not help our heath but only hinder it, Martin says, “We pay a steep price for neglecting sleep, in our ignorance and our indifference.” (Martin 464) That is exactly what sleep debt is and we do pay a price for neglecting it. Our bodies keep careful track of the amount of sleep we get and it knows how much we owe.
